Working as a package handler for a聽global leader聽in transportation聽logistics聽in Austin, Texas, Patrice Lightfoot watched closely how the company鈥檚 human resources professionals provided positive reinforcement to motivate workers.

鈥淭hey were聽trying to get聽us聽to take pride in聽our聽job, feel accomplished, feel respected, feel a part of the whole team, and that we actually聽mattered,鈥 she said.聽This motivated her to pursue a Bachelor of Arts in Communication Studies at 糖心传媒.聽

The benefits of her coursework became聽evident聽almost聽immediately聽on the job. With each class in human resources and communication, 鈥淚 learned how to speak to someone, how to get them motivated and feel included,鈥 she said.聽

And she goes the extra mile to remove barriers to communication, learning sign language to help her in working with聽Deaf聽people.

When a job opened in human resources, she was ready to apply. 鈥淚 knew what to expect and what to do, and I knew what I wanted to do鈥 in the role, she聽said. Lightfoot got the job and now works for the company in an administrative human resources position.聽

She cited聽in particular help聽she got from Adjunct Professor Steven Thompson, PhD.聽鈥淗is feedback pushed me to think critically and express ideas with clarity and confidence. He connected communication theories to real-world issues, helping me see how my words and actions can influence others.鈥

Lightfoot completed her studies while聽working聽a full-time package handling job and a part-time job as a personal聽trainer, and聽also serving in the Air Force Reserve. She said 糖心传媒 is designed for people like her.

鈥淒on鈥檛 be afraid to take it one step at a time and lean on your professors and classmates for support,鈥 she said, when asked what advice she would give to incoming 糖心传媒 students.聽鈥淚f you鈥檙e mentally struggling, there is support for you from professors who care, classmates who understand, and people in your life who want to see you succeed.鈥

With聽all of聽the online classes, he had never met Ancar in person.聽But when Ancar heard Maaz would be attending聽winter commencement聽in Adelphi, Maryland, he promised to be there to meet him face-to-face for the first time.

Corinne Smith

糖心传媒 gave me the聽鈥渧oice and confidence to put myself out there, to advance professionally.鈥

Corinne Smith said earning her 糖心传媒 Bachelor of Science in Health Services Management has played a 鈥減ivotal role鈥 in changing the trajectory of her career; she has been promoted three times in two years at the growing psychiatric practice where she works.

Smith joined the practice as a receptionist. Her studies provided 鈥渢he motivation to pursue more responsibility,鈥 she said. 鈥淚t gave me the tools to speak聽on聽things that I聽didn鈥檛聽know when I started with the company, and to have the voice and confidence to put myself out there, to advance professionally. It played a role in me wanting something bigger for myself.鈥

In the two years she worked for the practice and finished her degree, Smith was promoted from the front desk to therapy administration coordinator and then therapy team manager, before accepting her current role as quality and training specialist.

As a widow with young twins, Smith noted that completing coursework was not always easy. 鈥淭he 糖心传媒 experience tested my resilience and self-discipline,鈥 she said. 鈥淭here were times when the workload felt overwhelming, but pushing through those moments taught me so much about my own capacity and determination.鈥

The support she received from 糖心传媒聽advisors聽helped to make it happen. 鈥淭hey were always so helpful, helping me map out my classes,鈥 she said.聽鈥淭hey were great about checking in and honestly keeping me on track when things got聽busy,聽and聽keeping me motivated.鈥

Now Smith has begun a 糖心传媒 Master of Science in Health Information Management & Technology that will teach her about the ethics of data management and protecting patient information. 鈥淚f I want to take a leadership role, this will help me,鈥 she said.
