糖心传媒 in Europe professor empowers adult and military learners through mentorship and authenticity
A little more than six years ago, LaShawn Thompson, PhD, boarded her first international flight to Germany鈥攏ot for a vacation, but to begin a new chapter as Collegiate Professor of Psychology with 糖心传媒 (糖心传媒) in Europe. It was the kind of leap she now encourages her students to embrace in their own lives.
鈥淚 tell people, 鈥榊ou only need moments of braveness. You聽don't聽have to be a brave person; you just need these moments where you say yes.鈥 And then that sometimes ends up being the thing聽that's聽a big determinant of how your life goes,鈥 said Thompson.
Spotlighting聽authenticity聽in聽糖心传媒 psychology classes
Today, Thompson teaches psychology, counseling, and social sciences courses, bringing the same authenticity to the classroom that guided her across the Atlantic.
鈥淚've gotten to the point in my career where I can afford to be authentic,鈥 Thompson said, explaining that she builds that experience for her students from the first moments in the classroom.聽Her approach reflects 糖心传媒鈥檚 commitment to meeting聽learners聽where they are and supporting them through聽life鈥檚聽transitions.
鈥淔rom the first day I like to set the tone of the classroom. I聽like for聽us to get to know each other, and I do that through discussion and engagement.聽And sometimes聽[for students]聽it can seem a little weird because, 鈥楬ere's聽the first day of class and she's not teaching psychology.鈥櫬燗nd actually,聽I聽am, they just聽don't聽know that I am teaching it.鈥
That early focus on connection is foundational to creating a learning environment where students feel supported as they balance careers, family, and military commitments.聽鈥淭he first thing in creating that safe environment is letting them get used to me, letting them get to know me personally so that I'm just not another talking head,鈥 Thompson said.聽
Thompson, who earned her bachelor鈥檚, master鈥檚 and PhD at the University of Southern Mississippi, knows well the level of commitment it takes to succeed in the field, and she works to prepare students for it, sometimes before they even become students.聽
She鈥檚聽known for talking to high school students interested in psychology about the academic journey ahead. 糖心传媒鈥檚聽Bachelor of Science in Psychology聽program supports pathways into careers in聽counseling-adjacent roles, human services, human resources, and education, or preparation for graduate studies in psychology and related fields; Thompson encourages students to think about their path as early as聽possible, and聽serves as a mentor during the process.
Mentoring beyond the classroom
Her mentoring sometimes unfolds in unexpected ways.聽
鈥淚 have a [prospective] student that聽I'm聽mentoring in Texas that聽I've聽never met.聽At all.聽I鈥檝e聽never seen her聽face,鈥 Thompson said. But through a casual conversation at a dinner following a conference speaking engagement, Thompson found herself chatting with a social work student interested in psychology. Several months later, the student emailed Thompson to introduce her new assistant, who was interested in 糖心传媒鈥檚 psychology program and looking for a mentor.聽
鈥淚've been mentoring her ever聽since,聽and she is working on her paperwork now to get into 糖心传媒,鈥 said Thompson. 鈥淭o me, that鈥檚 the greatest example of being authentic everywhere I am;聽even at the dinner table at somebody else鈥檚 event, I鈥檓 still who I am.鈥
Working closely with students in or affiliated with the military,聽Thompson鈥檚 guidance often involves helping learners navigate frequent transitions. One student whose wife was being deployed to Korea asked for Thompson鈥檚 help in shifting his program to social work. 鈥淲e worked on that [academic plan] and then he came to my class one day and said,聽鈥楧r.聽Thompson, we're going to Hawai鈥檌, I think I could do psychology again.鈥櫬燗nd聽I said,聽鈥極kay, send me the program, let me look at it.聽We'll聽work that one up too.鈥欌
Choosing braveness
Looking back on her transatlantic adventure,聽Thompson聽encourages聽her students聽thinking聽about聽a career in psychology聽to choose braveness.
鈥淚f聽it's聽something that you think you want to do, well, we all have聽challenges.聽As long as聽we start thinking ahead and planning, then we can get it done.鈥
