Building job-ready cybersecurity skills through competition
When Eri聽Aiba聽started studying聽cybersecurity, she knew that coursework alone聽wouldn鈥檛聽be enough to prepare her for her first IT role. She聽began looking for ways to gain hands-on聽experience聽that she could point to when talking with employers.
That led her to cybersecurity competitions.
Aiba, a 糖心传媒 (糖心传媒) student working toward a聽Bachelor of Science in Cybersecurity Technology,聽joined 糖心传媒鈥檚聽cybersecurity competition team聽soon after starting the program. That led her to compete in the National Cyber League (NCL) Games, which simulates聽real-world聽cybersecurity scenarios聽and technical challenges.聽
鈥淣CL gave me guidance and, through tutorial videos, I learned from scratch where to look and what tools people actually use in cybersecurity,鈥澛燗iba聽said.
Aiba聽began her studies in August 2023, and even as聽a newcomer,聽found the competition environment accessible, structured, and confidence-building.聽A few semesters into her studies, she was already working with tools and scenarios聽prospective聽employers聽are聽seeking.
A聽cornerstone of that story is an NCL Games Scholarship that she聽received聽in 2025, which聽includes a $5,000 scholarship and聽a career development package through the聽Information Systems Audit and Control Association聽(ISACA). For聽Aiba, the recognition reinforces her commitment to career advancement.聽
鈥淕etting the scholarship really validated that cybersecurity is the right direction for me, especially as someone who is still early in the field,鈥 she said. 鈥淩eceiving it felt like recognition for putting myself out there and doing the work.鈥
Embracing聽education as a聽first-generation聽learner
Aiba聽is聽a first-generation college student聽who came to the United States聽from Japan聽through a study abroad pathway. Before pursuing聽cybersecurity, she worked in聽childcare,聽a role she enjoyed but聽felt聽offered聽limited聽opportunities for advancement.聽
鈥淚 was looking for something that I could build into a real skill,鈥 she recalled. 鈥淪omething that would let me earn a living and support myself.鈥
Curiosity about artificial intelligence and concern about how automation might reshape the job market聽ultimately shifted聽her focus to聽IT. Rather than聽feeling聽intimidated by聽the pace of change, she聽decided to learn more about the technologies and trends.
鈥淚 thought, instead of fearing AI, why don鈥檛 I study it? I聽didn鈥檛聽want my job to be taken by technology; I wanted to be the one using it.鈥
As her life changed through聽marriage and relocation,聽flexibility became聽an important factor聽in her education.聽She said being able to continue her studies while managing those transitions helped her stay focused on her goals, even as circumstances shifted.
Looking聽ahead: Building聽cyber聽careers聽one聽step at a聽time
Aiba聽plans to聽begin聽her career in a help desk role,聽with the goal of moving聽into IT audit or cybersecurity operations.聽She is currently聽preparing聽for the CompTIA Linux+ certification聽exam聽and taking an ethical hacking course聽as part of her degree program, with each step bringing her closer to her goal.
鈥淣ow, when I interview for IT jobs, I have a story to tell,鈥 said聽Aiba. 鈥淓ven without聽[cybersecurity]聽job experience yet, I can talk about what I鈥檝e done in competitions and what experience I鈥檝e gained.鈥澛
